Rust Server Showing the Wrong Country? How to Correct Its Location

Rust’s May 7, 2026 update added country mapping to the server browser. Rust estimates a server’s country and coordinates from its IP address and uses those coordinates to sort servers by proximity to the player.
Facepunch said the change addressed a system in which server owners had been able to spoof ping information. Rust uses MaxMind to determine the country associated with a server IP.
Check the player location first
Rust estimates the player’s location for nearby-server sorting. The location control appears at the top-left of the Play menu, where the player can override the estimate; that override is saved between sessions.
If the unexpected result appears to affect one player, check that player’s location control before requesting a server-IP correction.
Check the server IP
Enter the server’s public IP address in the MaxMind GeoIP database demo. The demo accepts up to 25 IP addresses and can display location, approximate latitude and longitude, and an accuracy radius.
MaxMind states that its coordinates describe a larger geographic area and are not precise enough to identify a street address or household.
If the demo assigns the server IP to the wrong location, use MaxMind’s GeoIP location-correction form. The form accepts an IP address or network and requests a country and email address; region, city, and postal code fields are also available. MaxMind recommends using an email address associated with a company domain when possible.
Submission and review
A correction submitted without an associated MaxMind account must be verified by email within 24 hours. An unverified correction will not be reviewed and must be resubmitted.
MaxMind does not guarantee acceptance and says its correction team evaluates requests against multiple data sources. One-off corrections are typically reviewed within one to two business days, and accepted corrections are incorporated into the next database release.
Hosted servers and geofeeds
Facepunch advises owners of hosted Rust servers to contact their hosting provider when the detected country is wrong because the provider can arrange for MaxMind to use its geofeed data.
MaxMind recommends geofeeds for network operators managing corrections at scale. Geofeed corrections are imported and reviewed once per business day.
