How to Enable a Free Private Server Option in Your Roblox Experience
If your friends or community want a server that's just for them, Roblox has this built in — you don't need to script anything. Private servers are a per-experience setting that the experience owner turns on in Roblox Studio. This guide shows exactly where the toggle lives, how to choose between a free and a paid server, and the two gotchas worth knowing before your members try to join.
Where the setting lives
The Private Servers toggle sits in the experience's monetization settings, even if you plan to offer servers for free:
- Open your experience in Roblox Studio.
- Go to File → Experience Settings.
- Select the Monetization section.
- Toggle Private Servers on.
- Save your settings.
That's the whole workflow — once saved, players will see the private server option on your experience's page.
Free or paid?
When you enable private servers you choose how they're offered:
- Free — anyone can create a private server for your experience at no cost. Free private servers remain fully supported, and for a friend group or small community this is usually the right choice.
- Paid — players pay Robux to create and keep a private server. If you go paid, note that the price floor is 10 Robux.
If you're setting this up so one group of friends can play together, pick Free and you're done.
Gotcha #1: paid access conflicts with private servers
You cannot have paid access (charging Robux or local currency to play the experience at all) and private servers enabled at the same time. If your experience uses paid access, you'd need to drop paid access first.
Gotcha #2: under-13 players may not be able to join
Players under 13 may be blocked from joining private servers depending on their privacy and parental-control settings. If your community includes younger players, tell them up front — otherwise you'll spend an evening debugging "why can't I join?" when the answer is an account setting, not your server.
Changing the price later
As of the April 30, 2026 update, creators can update private server prices every 60 days without canceling existing subscriptions. Roblox notifies subscribers 30 days before a price increase takes effect, and price decreases apply at the subscriber's next renewal cycle. This is worth knowing if you start free and consider going paid later.
One forward-looking note on paid servers
Since April 30, 2026, Roblox Plus subscribers can access paid private servers at no additional cost as part of their subscription. Creators still earn based on the server price from subscriber usage, up to a maximum of 100 Robux per subscriber per server — but if you're counting on paid private servers as a revenue stream, factor this in.
Quick recap
- Studio → File → Experience Settings → Monetization → Private Servers on → save.
- Free is fully supported; paid has a 10 Robux floor.
- Paid access and private servers can't be enabled together.
- Under-13 members may be blocked by their privacy/parental settings — warn them ahead of time.
